Organization:

Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Nuxalk, Heiltsuk, Wuikinuxv and Ulkatcho Peoples, the Central Coast Regional District provides local and regional protective, recreational, environmental, and transportation services to area ratepayers.

Position Overview:

The Deputy Emergency Program Coordinator position is a volunteer appointment crucial in supporting the implementation of the Central Coast Emergency Plan and building disaster-resilient communities. This role involves acting as a community liaison and assisting the Emergency Program Coordinator in addressing various hazards and threats that may affect the region, such as wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding, storms, and power outages, with a strong emphasis on inclusivity, cultural safety, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Community Liaison: Serve as a key point of contact for emergency preparedness and response efforts, ensuring the participation and involvement of all community members, including those from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.

Support Emergency Plan Implementation: Assist the Emergency Program Coordinator in executing the Denny Island Emergency Plan.

Familiarization: Gain a deep understanding of the emergency program, community response plans, and operations related to emergencies or disasters, and ensure that these plans and procedures are inclusive and considerate of diverse needs and perspectives.

Hazard and Threat Assessment: Identify and assess potential hazards and threats to the community, contributing to developing effective response strategies.

Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond to emergencies promptly, in coordination with the Emergency Program Coordinator, regional district, and relevant authorities.

Training and Development: Participate in occasional training opportunities the regional district provides to enhance emergency response skills and knowledge.

Availability: Be available for contact by phone and/or email. Ensure that timely and inclusive communication channels are established with the Emergency Program Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in emergency preparedness and a strong commitment to the safety and well-being of the community with a specific commitment to cultural and social inclusion.
  • Willingness to volunteer time and dedication to the role, with the level of commitment varies based on the number of emergencies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with community members, emergency response teams, and local authorities.
  • Familiarity with the main hazards and threats, including wildfire, earthquake, tsunami, flooding, storm, and power outages.

  1. Prevention: Contribute to strategies and actions aimed at preventing emergencies or minimizing their impact.
  2. Preparedness: Foster active participation and engagement of all community members, regardless of their backgrounds, in emergency preparedness activities.
  3. Response: Assist in coordinating emergency response efforts as directed by the Emergency Program Coordinator.
  4. Recovery: Support the recovery phase following an emergency or disaster.
